Bed bugs
These insects can be eliminated from your home by using various thorough treatments.
What type of insect are they?
Bedbugs are nocturnal, non-flying and small oval shaped insects which are normally around 6mm long that also feed on the blood of mammals.
So how do you get them?
Very often, bedbugs will normally form in public places, such as transport or hotels.
How do I know they’re there?
As bedbugs are nocturnal, you may often see signs and courses formed by the insect. Therefore, some of the signs are most likely finding bites located on your arms, in the morning (typically a hard white swelling) and spotting around your bedroom skirting board. In addition, "spotting" is a small red pin head that the bedbug has deposited after feeding.
How do I identify a bedbug?
If you are concerned that your home may have bedbugs, you may consider putting a double sided tape around the legs under your bed mattress. This method then allows bugs to stick to the tape, ensuring that you receive an insect sample to inspect. There are also some good quality monitoring traps available to assist with bedbug detection. If you suspect that you have bedbugs in just one of your bedrooms, then it is advised to not sleep in another room, as this may become widespread around your home.

Fleas
Usually, it takes around a few weeks to fully dispose a property with fleas. This is mainly due to how the flea develops.
Flea cycles
A female flea can live for up to two years, which during that time, can lay around 1,000 eggs. Therefore, these eggs then develop into larvae, which then spin a cocoon (pupae stage) where it matures into an adult. Typically, it can take around two to three weeks for the larvae to turn into pupa, and then at least another further two weeks for the adult to emerge. The adult flea however, is around 4mm long, very thin and cannot fly. These male fleas can easily jump 40cm high, and a distance of around half a meter per jump. The key to obtaining full eradication of a flea problem, is to treat animals with a prescribed product from your vet and then to fully treat them properly.

Treatments should start of by vacuuming the property, and then treating all floors, fabric covered furniture and curtains with a high quality insecticide, containing a knockdown ingredient which deals with the adults. This is a growth regulator to prevent the fleas from fully developing, and a residual product to give some longer lasting effect.
Pet and human bedding, along with clothing should not be treated with insecticide, but washed at a minimum of 60 degrees, dry cleaned or even steam laundered. Regular thorough vacuuming of your home will also help to rid the property of any flea eggs.
